Vertical farming concept

farm-tower.jpgIt might not be a revolutionary new idea that the Scientists of Columbia University are proposing, however it is definitely a new concept that they are trying to bring into existence. Shortage of farm lands is not news to anyone from this world. In countries like Japan farmlands are more of a luxury property than plots in Tokyo. The point is, in countries like Japan there isn’t much space for farming so the government imports almost all of its population’s rations requirements from the neighbors, so if this concept would be brought into practical existence, the possibilities could be endless not only for Japan but for all the countries worldwide as well in the future.

The scientists are proposing a 30 story skyscraper in cities which would be used to grow food crops and raise small livestock for urban city populations. This would not only eliminate transportation costs but also the pollution expenses. Irrigation would be controlled from a central computer system and maximum efficiency shall be maintained at all times, as for the sunlight the idea is to have a large rooftop solar system which shall collect solar energy/light and then distribute it in all the floors to make sure that even in a controlled environment the entire process is as close to the natural farming process as possible.

According to Professor Dickson Despommier the benefits of such a project would far outweigh any disadvantages. “Even if it’s not quite natural…. a little bit factory-like in terms of its production, here’s what you’re going to get back: you’re going to get back the rest of the earth. And I’ll take that any time.”
